The No-Stress Guide to Instagram Sizes (So Your Posts Always Look Clean)

If your designs look perfect on your laptop but weird on Instagram, it’s not you; it’s the crop. Instagram shows the same asset in different places (feed, profile grid, Stories, Reels), each with its own shape. Once you understand those shapes, you’ll design faster, export smarter, and stop losing logos to mystery margins.
The 10-second mental model
- Feed = square (1:1), portrait (4:5), or landscape (~1.91:1).
- Stories & Reels = full-screen vertical (9:16).
- Rule of thumb: Design tall first (9:16), then derive smaller crops for feed. It’s the most efficient pipeline and preserves composition. Instagram’s own help pages confirm the accepted ranges (1.91:1 to 3:4 for photos, up to 9:16 for Reels).
Your size cheat-sheet (bookmark this!)
Feed photos
- Square: 1080 × 1080 (1:1)
- Portrait: 1080 × 1350 (4:5)
- Landscape: 1080 × 566 (≈1.91:1)
Upload at least 1080 px wide; IG accepts photo aspect ratios 1.91:1 to 3:4.
Stories
- 1080 × 1920 (9:16)
- Photos show ~5 seconds by default; videos can run up to ~60 seconds per Story. Facebook
Reels
- 1080 × 1920 (9:16) (accepted video range is 1.91:1 to 9:16)
- Length: up to 3 minutes as of 2025 (finally!).
Good to know (video quality)
- Aim for 30 FPS or higher and keep the file ≤ 4 GB (Meta specs).
Why your perfect design still gets cropped
A Reel that’s full-screen in the Reels viewer can preview differently in the feed and look different again on your grid. That’s normal. Keep key elements centered and expect trims around the edges in some contexts. (Adobe’s guide calls out that Reels show full-screen, but previews and the grid can crop to other shapes.)
Safe-zone rule:
- Keep logos, faces, and CTAs inside the central 80% of the frame.
- Leave breathing room at the top & bottom for UI (usernames, captions, buttons).
The pro workflow I use with design teams
- Master file at 9:16 (1080×1920).
This covers Stories and Reels, the most immersive surfaces. - Derive feed versions from the master:
- 4:5 (1080×1350) → best for vertical screen real estate in the feed
- 1:1 (1080×1080) → safest universal crop
- 1.91:1 (1080×566) → for cinematic or wide product shots
(All are within Instagram’s accepted ranges.) - Export hygiene checklist
- Photos: at least 1080 px wide; avoid over-compression.
- Video: MP4/MOV, ≥30 FPS, ≤4 GB, aspect ratio 1.91:1 to 9:16 for Reels.
Composition tips that save campaigns
- Design for vertical first. Most views are mobile and tall. Reels + Stories are your attention engines.
- Mind the first frame. Carousels and Reels rely on that opener for thumb-stopping power.
- Text size ≠ desktop size. If it’s under 24–28 px equivalent on a 1080-wide canvas, it’s probably too small for phones.
- Face & product priority. Eye-tracking loves faces and clear product hero shots. Place them center-safe.
- Profile & grid realities. Profile photos display as circles; center your subject. Grid previews and feed crops vary; test before launch.
Common pitfalls (and easy fixes)
- “My logo got cut!” You designed to the edge. Pull key elements into the middle 80% and re-export the three feed crops.
- “Why does my Reel look different in the feed?” Because it is, the feed preview isn’t the same as the Reels viewer. Center-safe composition fixes this.
- “It looks soft on Instagram.” Export at 1080×… (or higher, same ratio), avoid heavy compression, and keep clean edges on text. (Meta specs and community threads repeatedly point to sizing/quality on export.)
Quick starter pack (copy/paste for your brief)
- Master: 1080×1920 (9:16) – Stories/Reels
- Feed Portrait: 1080×1350 (4:5)
- Feed Square: 1080×1080 (1:1)
- Feed Landscape: 1080×566 (1.91:1)
- Video targets: 30 FPS+, ≤4 GB, Reels up to 3 minutes (2025 update)
Final word
You don’t need dozens of templates, just one great 9:16 master and a disciplined habit of exporting 4:5, 1:1, and 1.91:1 variant for the feed. Keep the important stuff cantered, give your text breathing room, and sanity-check crops with a private test post. That’s how you get designs that look intentional everywhere.
